Langara alumni have stepped up to expand Langara’s scholarships, bursaries and award opportunities. Over the past four months, eight awards (3 endowed and 6 annual) have been created by alumni, with the Foundation reaching a milestone of 400 annual awards in August!
Our donors come from all sectors of our community and make a difference to the lives of our students by removing financial barriers to their learning. Here are a few recent highlights:
Harjit and Ranjit Sangra, both Langara Alumni, recently created the Sangra Family Scholarship: an entrance award for five students annually, who demonstrate financial need and show outstanding commitment to High School Athletics. The family wanted to give back and help students as they transitioned directly from high school to Langara to continue their studies.
Alumni, Doris Meyer established The Shelley Fralic Fund in memory of her good friend and fellow alumni, Shelley Fralic, accomplished award-winning journalist, and to honour Shelly’s children. This endowed award supports two Journalism students annually with an entrance bursary and scholarship for the outstanding editor of the Voice. Doris’s gift will help alleviate the financial strain our students experience and help them along in their educational journey.
As a Langara Alumni with a Fine Arts diploma and a current employee of the department, Jeff Powell, along with his wife Anne, are passionate about supporting students who are studying Fine Arts. Together they established the Powell Family Award to recognize Fine Arts students who demonstrate an ability to challenge themselves, experiment in the studio and are engaged in the community.
The Foundation is always delighted to hear from you. If you would like to learn more about our awards or wish to discuss your fund, then please contact us at foundation@langara.ca
